I embrace you once.
The sensation is new and exciting.
I look forward to the next.
I embrace you twice.
The feeling is warm and inviting.
I love you.
I embrace you three times.
The ritual is familiar and comforting.
I get by with you.
I embrace you four times.
The tenderness is cheap and breezy.
I make it quick.
I embrace you five times.
The reality is stiff and suffocating.
I look for a way out.
I embrace you six times.
The dagger is cold and deadly.
I look for a new lover.

I can relate. I'm at the fifth embrace, I'd like to get back to number three. (Married 10 years in July).

Peter-I'm sure this is tongue in cheek but if you were my patient and said that in a session the cops would have to go check and see if Mrs. Kirby isn't cut into pieces.

It's well written, but a bit depressing :(

We're still bouncing tween 2-3-2-3 LOL
ETA: lol...read again the "I get by with you".. so I guess it would be more 1-2-1-2-1-2 and 1/2 of 3 ;)

I hate to brag, but we're still in between (more of a combination of) the first and second embraces. I've been with my wife for fifteen years now, married for thirteen (in October). We are a silly and happy couple.
I hope all is just as well with the rest of you.

Um, I don't think it's about a human lover, guys.

Maybe it is one of those God/lover metaphors that works on more than one level?
I find in my own personal and spiritual life we've cycled repeatedly through all 6 stages, and not necessarily in order either.

Maybe not for you, but authorial intent is shot to piece once an audience is involved.
